Occasionally, I throw in photography for some spice. People ask me what is your media? my answer is anything I can get my hands on. I see art in everything. The challange is reproducing the works of the greatest artist ever Mother Nature, with a human twist on it.

Artist Summary: When Ted realized that if he did not start creating art, he never would, he began his experimentation with clay. After Ted received a BFA with a concentration in ceramics (his second useless degree, the first is a BA in political science), Ted began sculpting heads in clay and other mediums.

All of the work result from his interest in the power of primitive and ancient sculptures and how such sculptures connect the meditative and contemplative mind. Images from 30,000 years of art in places throughout the world, such as Egypt, South America, Africa, and Polynesia are connected with real life experiences. Sculpting objects allows me to find in an interior space a response beyond the intellect, an emotional reaction. It is creating life out of nothing.

Several of his works are included in Lark Books 2004 publication, 500 Figures in Clay. He won the Laguna Clay Award at the “Colorado Clay Exhibition, 2003”, Foothills Art Center. Mr. Fish has been juried into several other exhibitions including “James Surls Juried Sculpture Exhibit,” Red Brick Art Center, Aspen, CO, July 2009; “21st International Juried Show”, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, 2007; “Colorado Art Open 2005 and 2009,” Foothills Art Center; “St. Petersburg Clay National 2003,” Florida; “Origins in Clay III,” San Antonio Potters Guild, Texas; and “Annual Face to Face,” The STAGE Gallery, Massapequa, NY. In October 2005 Mr. Fish’s solo show, “Where Words Stop” was held at the Lakewood Cultural Center in Colorado.

My “day jobs” are ski patrolling in Breckenridge in the winter and as a state parks ranger in the summer.

The experience of living in South America (Bogota, Colombia) for approximately three and one-half years while I was young greatly affected my aesthetic vision. My parents purchased clothing and decorative items made by the native South American people which had a great primitive and pre-Columbian influence on me. I still have some of these items and refer to them for artistic inspiration. Having spent most of my life in Colorado, I have also been greatly influenced and inspired by the arts and crafts of the native people of the American West and Southwest.

At the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia I learned many technical skills to apply to my art while also being exposed to the broad arena of the evolution and development of my art and myself as a person (which are inseparable). Living and studying art in Philadelphia also greatly influenced the aesthetic and contextual aspects of my art.

The materials I use in my work are quite varied. I am very interested in combining materials of differing colors, textures, and characters. I often use found objects as springboards for my work. While many of my pieces are attempts at simply creating interesting visual forms by combining differing materials and images, I find my work increasingly relates my own life experiences and concerns.
