Name: Heidi Michel Bady – Encaustic, Photography, Drawing, Mixed Media, Collage, Sculpture
Artist Summary: My graduate experience, while a great gift to have spent so much time with the best people I could have asked for, really messed up my actual art output for years following my graduate show. I ended doing things in school that were more angst-full than I acutally felt inside to please teachers that were trying to drag something wonderful out of me. Now while I appreciate the effort, I’m not sure what they were after were the same things that I was truely looking for. I can say, however, that my critique classes were a true learning experience and have served me well, not just in looking at art, but in learning about how I should look at life.
Enough years have passed that I can draw a bird and make something out of it that I think is beautiful – without hearing the words, decorative, derivative, dilettante…well almost.
Since leaving school, I have experimented with different media and have settled on layering different papers, photographs, and drawings in encaustic (a beeswax recipe) as a way to express myself.
I want to enjoy my own work, have it mean something to me, and hopefully have it touch at least one other person. This may be why the birds became such an important component in alot of these pieces. I started noticing all the birds in my life at a particular time, and that is when I started drawing and photographing them.
I do take my own photographs, and I also draw with pens and colored pencils from pictures online, from books, or from photos. I either use the original drawing, or scan them into photoshop so that I can change sizes and repeat patterns. I also reserve the right to color birds in a way that nature never intended.
Patterns and repetition have always been a way for me to express an idea, but I would use old books or other text and not my own voice. Something that is brand new for me is using pieces and parts of my sketchbook/journal in my own work. In the past I was always too afraid of putting myself out there in that way. But the filter is off now, for better or worse. And if it means that much to me, hopefully it will be well recieved.
White is a color and can be your favorite. It really is okay.
